No dedicated servers on MW2

Whatever goodwill may have been garnered by Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling's announcement that the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 wasn't delayed has been stripped away by an interview which surfaced later in the day. On the latest podcast (around the 1:41 mark) of Call of Duty fansite Bash and Slash, Bowling revealed that matchmaking within Modern Warfare 2 would be reliant on proprietary server technology (called IWNet), and wouldn't allow users to host their own dedicated servers.

Even without a doctorate in PC gaming affairs, it's easy to see how this fact would upset someone (or some community) who drops a wad of cash every month on renting a private server. Also preturbed by this news are fans of modded game modes and custom maps -- both of which would be unlikely under the IWNet framework. While Bowling maintained that the new server tech would be a boon for the PC gaming community, most hardcore PC gamers aren't particularly thrilled about MW2's server hosting capabilities being brought into parity with those of the console versions of the game. (That is to say, completely eliminated.)

yeah sucks because i know 3 hosting companies that have already started to sale dedicate servers for the release and now they have to refund all that money

im not too fussed really, im buying the game and i dont think i get to play with you guys too much until summer (because of time difference). but i think they will kind of sell slots to communities for sure, or allow people to host their own somehow.

no it means it will be like a console you do quick matches or fellow a friend into a server and they will all be dedicated infinity ward servers no custom names servers so no Joint[Ops] server to play with a fellow Ops member you will add them to a friends list and just fellow them into a publicly hosted infinity ward server. Now you can start a server like in COD3 on console but after you leave the game the server will close just like a console game would do.

This is why all the game hosting companies that have already start to persale dedicated servers will be screwed. They have to refund all the money they have collected unless this gets changed.

So selling slots will not take place if this happens nor will allowing people to host their own server because that would mean dedicated server's and that is what they are trying to stop. I am not sure how many of you play on console but i did this weekend with a friend i played CODMW and the only way to join a friend is to fellow them into a server that means one person joins a server and you have a per set server list that other players have started on the infinity ward server and then you are able to connect but as soon as that person that started the server leaves the server will crash or some one else in there will be come the server admin. Like most consoles that would be the second person that joined the server or the server host can hand over the admin to another player before leaving. So as you can see we would not have a Joint[Ops] server we would just join or create a temp server to play on and when done play the server is gone. One way around this is some one like myself that has 3 machine would have to buy a copy start a server and then leave one machine connected to the server at all times.
